Today’s blog is on a connection to the narrative “My name is Margaret” by Maya Angelou, the connection of the two pieces are, I’m writing about an emotional real-life scene from my life during my high school lacrosse career, as well as appealing to the five senses with description of the event.
One Thursday morning as I got up for school getting dressed quickly on a warm spring day, slipping into my Interboro razor back lacrosse jersey I knew it was going to a proud day to be a BUC. Ready and excited to go to school, I ran down the stairs telling my family that game started at 3pm. On my way to school I received a group text with my team and coach with an inspirational quote about winning today’s game. Once I walked in school I heard the loud echo of the loudspeaker announcing todays game. When the school bell rang at 2:20pm the whole team did the BUCS chant as we raced down the hallway. Approaching the locker room, with the smell of stinky pinnies, and cleats my mind was diverted only on the game. We all went outside and began our warm ups running on the crisp, freshly cut and lined grass, when my coach blew the whistle to bring it in to go out on the field to begin the game. She yelled the starting lineup, and my best friend and I did our game day handshake while running onto the field. The game began, and the score was close. I vividly remember intercepting the ball, and running like wind to the goal, hearing nothing but my coach yell “Mendez take it to goal!” approaching the net I slammed the ball in the goal hearing a loud swoosh in the back of the net and my team yelling. Shortly after, it began to rain at half time I sipped my cold water, trying to catch my breath before heading back onto the field. As I got ready behind the line I felt my lacrosse stick slipping from the raindrops. I had a feeling the second half of the game would be harder due to the weather conditions. The game got closer and closer to the point we were tied with only five minutes left of the game. We were battling back with the other team, but our attempts to score were just not working. We all began to feel discouraged as the clock struck zero it was time for overtime. This only gave us a short period of time to win the game. We took possession of the ball and my teammate ran in to score the winning goal. We screamed and shouted, and all hugged on the rainy field. We were officially Del-Val Champs! As we ran to the bus happily talking about the game. We jumped up and down singing to the speaker on the bus. My coach stood up and announced we were Del-Val champs!! If there was a lesson to be learned during this game, it was to keep our heads up. We worked harder than anything during the season for this outcome. It was an emotional day, in the best way finishing out my senior year I wouldn’t want it any other way.
