My fourteenth blog post I will be talking about my research project. I have based my project off of the film Miss Representation. Thus far the only think I have struggled with throughout the course of the project was getting it in on time, however I have finished my first draft. I have used three sources with statistics and information about how the media is bias and can be harmful to the young girls using it. I have viewed many sources for my project to try and get an accurate representation of the statistics specifically on where social media has normalized self-harm to young women all over the world. In my research project I wrote, “In 2011, 45.9 girls per 10,000 harmed themselves, a number rose from 68 percent to 77 percent per 10,000 in 2014 (Bodkin). The number of self-harms in young females have risen dramatically throughout the years, and young girls that have social media profiles are more likely to engage in self-harming behavior do to their dissatisfaction of their bodies and appearance. People all over the world are even sharing and encouraging suicide over social media influencing young adult but more particular young women in general.” I found these particular statistics interesting because I never realized that social media had such a large impact on self-harm throughout the world. These statistics made me have a whole different aspect on what I do day to day. I spend so much time on social media it has actually become a problem, but to find out it has been encouraging and influencing people to physically harm themselves its horrible. The film Miss Representation helped me further understand all of the issues women in power have to deal with every day. In my project I talked about what Nancy Pelosi said in the film, “if they can see young women who share their experience, raising a young family, speaking for them, identifying with their aspirations. We're creating new leaders, and they're going to not look like how they always did...an older, white male. They're gonna look like a woman, and they're gonna look like people of colour, and that is the true reflection of this country and of this world (Miss Representation 2011).” It made me reflect to myself and my college major and how it may impact my life in the future but was also inspiring that she is advocating for the people of minorities, and the women of our nation. Overall, I know that I will have to revise and edit my research project, and add a few things into it over the course of the rest of the semester.

For blog post #13 I will be talking about my research project based on the film “Miss Representation”. Each key point in the film supports my thesis on how the medias bias prevents young girls from achieving positions of power in American society.
For my research project I decided to use the film Miss Representation for my main source along with a few other sources. My rhetorical purpose is to persuade using argumentation. I chose the Genre of an MLA Research Paper with MLA style citations. My primary audience for my paper is the media and young girls, for them to know how their bias prevents and discourages young girls and their aspirations of achieving positions of power in American society and for young girls to not allow the media to prevent them from achieving their goals. In class we disused our thesis statements and how to better them using TPS and GPS. Using TPS and GPA helped better my thesis on keeping my research project on straight path without going off of topic, and how to properly grab my audiences attention with mu subject, opinion, an sources. What we learned about in class was different from what I have done before and it was a tad bit uncomfortable in doing stuff differently. What we learned in class made me think of why we were doing it so much differently in this class then my previous experiences in writing research papers. It makes more sense in a way it grabs the audiences attention with the topic and helps the readers understand what my position is on the topic, as well as what the reasons for my position are. Over all the hardest part of writing this paper and thesis is staying on topic but from what we learned in class I think it will really help improve my paper and future writing. This week’s blog is focused on my previous blogs, as well as our class discussion. Our class discussed and analyzed Mrs. Representation and The Mask You Live In, we pulled key words and information that was essential to the start of our research projects. The words we highlighted from the film allowed us to create Slug Lines, six-word Memoirs, and Found Poems I made for each film. More specifically I am going to be talking about how in class we re-genre the film “Miss Representation” to get a better feel on the films text, language, and themes.
In class we began analyzing one page of dialog of the film Miss Representation. At first glance there was harsh words being said, about how society views women. There were more negative things to say about women, then there were positive. The film centered around women of power, and in politics degrading and calling them cruel names. I took the negative words to re-genre a slug line, each word was right from the text of Miss Representation. “The rise of punditry in America is added to sexism and biased in the media.” Why are “experts” allowed to objectify women based of what they look like or what their job description is and portray it in the media to allow other men to do the same. I think people are to bias against certain genders and they are taught to be a certain way, and the media only emphasizes it in a negative way. I then made a six-word memoir from the text of the film. “Society failed women, I was fearless.” This short memoir really says it all about the film. Society portrays women in negative ways everyday only to leave women trying to fix themselves, so they can look more beautiful. Everything on the internet, news, and social media is portraying women like a sex object for men. The last three words exemplify how a woman is strong in a world where they aren’t considered “perfect” and where they are only seen as a sex object instead of a powerful person. Lastly, I wrote a found poem from the text of Miss Representation. De-humanizing the word liberal All women want is to be equal They try to sell us Using explicit images of us But I’m standing tall I will not crawl This poem exemplifies how women just want to be equal to men, work the same jobs, hold positions in government, and simply walk down the street without being looked at like a sex object. The media is portraying women in explicit images all over social media to just make money, but do not realize who they are hurting. Women are seen as a man’s property and are not seen as a human being. My eleventh blog post is similar to my previous blog “Miss Representation” but the roles are reversed. The film The Mask You Live In is about how men are treated and problems they experience due to their gender. In the first part of the film it says, “He wears a mask, and his face grows to fit it”, this particular saying by George Orwell made me stop and think are boys being taught the right way to be a man? Is the “social norm” truly allowing men to be their own person? The answer is no. Any guy has heard the expressions, “Be a man”, or “Man up” in their life time. Being taught at such a young age how to be a man is essential. But how can a man be taught to experience or show no emotion. The men in this film were only taught to fight and dominate people and circumstances and only left people thinking they weren’t enough.
This film made me feel disappointed in how people are raising their kids telling them to be a man of no emotions. People can’t go through life not showing emotions. There is a right and wrong way of teaching and a man who was taught that they can’t cry are angry or bottles their emotions up. To me it doesn’t make sense. Most of the men in this film thought they could manifest hyper masculinity by being tough and playing sports that only a man could play, yet it didn’t give them the attention and love they wanted from their father or male figure in their life. Being taught this even till this day is a destructive to culture. After watching male figures in this film and even from my own experience I’ve heard people calling males names and being harsh when a man doesn’t act tough enough, but that just inhumane. There were students in high school that were killed and sexually assaulted because they aren’t acting man enough because they thought it would be “fun” to physically hurt someone who was more emotional then tough. It just makes me feel that people are getting hurt and dying for no good reason, all because of the way people raise their children. Being masculine isn’t worth losing a person. This film impacts my knowing because we have all seen this happen sometime throughout our lives or it has happened to you. However young boys, and men need to be able to talk to someone instead. Most young boys in this film stated they are sad, and feel like they can’t be their true self, but can’t say anything about it to their friends without being bullied or their family with out saying “Man up”. In a segment of the film kids began a sentence “If you really knew me” and had heartbreaking things to say yet could not express their feelings about their own life. The United States in particular has allowed the idea of masculinity to make men feel they are not comfortable to step down from a fight or to cry and show emotion. Every man in the film was taught to be dominate, powerful, never back down, using violence to solve problems etc. As well as associating masculinity with athletic ability, saying males have to play sports. This film made me stop to think has the world just accepted this as a “social norm” and in this time would there ever be a change to how we teach young boys to be a man. Instead of teaching them males are superior and tough they should really be taught the proper way to act, that its ok to show emotion, and that males are equal and should treat women as their equals. This film makes me want to make a change in how people raise their children. Kids are being sets up for failure because they are only taught masculine things. To all kids to grow up thinking its ok to be able to do things a female would do. If parents taught their male children to be whatever they want to be their wouldn’t be such a gap in today’s society between males and females. My tenth blog post will be about a film created in 2014 called Miss Representation. The title really says it all, it based off of how women in our society are viewed. The film elaborates on how women in media, modeling, politics, etc. are “represented” as a sexual object, or have expectations to be in shape, and beautiful. It also covers how women in powerful positions are judged harshly and compared to men. Overall it comes down to gender in this film and how a woman is held to certain standards and not to be in powerful positions.
The arguments made in this film made me open my eyes to what was happening in the world, and to look at the bigger picture. I never noticed how women in the media were treated. I’ve been aware of women being treated like sex objects which is not ok. However, in this film particularly in politics Nancy Pelosi was treated horrible calling her hot, sexy, and other nasty things about her while on national television. Many males on news stations said, “she had no business being in politics, it was a man’s job”. She was publicly humiliated and harassed on national television, and nothing was done. This personally affected me thinking about my own career path studying politics wondering will this happen to me? As well as do I really want to watch a television network that subjects women to sexual harassment for the world to see. This film was eye opening and made me think about myself, and if it has happened to me before, or someone I knew, and we just thought it was “normal”. Today’s society needs to change in the way we view each other and to respect one’s job, whether they are male or female. The arguments in this film made me think about the world we live in and what we consider the “social norm”. Miss Representation impacted on my knowing allowing me to be more aware of what is going on, and how women are treated. This has been going on for decades. If you’ve ever seen an old movie its typically a traditional family, where the dad is off to work to support his wife and kids financially, while the wife takes care of the children, cooks and cleans the house, catering to their husband and family. However, its 2019 and the times have changed. Most women no longer stay at home to take care of family and household duties, they receive an education, and get jobs. Most women even hold a powerful position in government, doctors, lawyers, etc. Yet, what frustrates me is that women all over the world are sexified still. The world is evolving and so should men they believe they are more powerful, rich, or more educated. After watching this film, I just sat there, and thought is this a world I want to live in? I vividly remember my mom telling me that when I grow up I could be anything I want to be. However, in today’s society is that really true, yes you could be anything you want to be but being a powerful woman leads to the unwanted male comments about your appearance, sexual harassment and how you are incapable of having a male occupation in politics, business, law, etc. After watching Miss Representation, it not only made me want to make a change in the world but to strive harder to be something and have a prestigious job to prove people wrong. We all have the wrong idea of a women I once heard the saying “a woman belongs in the kitchen not the board room” and I just thought to myself as women we need to improve ourselves and strive to succeed not only as someone’s wife or mom but as a person. In my vlog post I answered questions of how my writing has improved over the course of my class. This course has impacted my writing, and better understood my knowledge of the true writing process. These writing styles and techniques made me a better author, and I will use each techinique thought my education, and career. My focus on this week’s blog post is how The Wizard of Oz clips helped me grasp a better understanding of the writing process for my blog posts, and my first draft of my narrative project. The clips included emotions in which helped me better understand my narrative project, which is based off of an emotional time in my life when I lost a loved one.
